This one is up on top of Star City Casino and I was able to get some shooting time up here because of an awesome security guard. I was actually up on the building next to this one, the Lyric theatre, which is like a giant glass Prism. The architecture reminded me a lot of the Tokyo Form Building in case you’ve been there. Anyways, I thought I was on a public balcony on the top floor of the building but in actuality I wasn’t supposed to be there and had tripped a silent alarm on a door that was supposed to be locked but wasn’t. So I was surprised when from behind me I heard an “oi what are you doing?!”. “Taking photo’s” I replied innocently… “of what?”responded the guard…. “of the glowing star” I said. “Oh, thats different. You see we have to protect our partrons rights to privacy and I thought you might have been photographing them in the casino”. That’s fair enough as you can actually see down into some of the gaming rooms from up on the roof of the Lyric Theatre. The guard said he’d take me over to the roof of the casino, proper, and let me have 5 minutes up there to get some shots of the neon star. What a champion ! We had to go to the base of the Lyric theatre then trek through the lower levels of star city, which is a bit like an expensive mall with clothes and jewellery shops. He then lead me through some area’s that were non-access for the general public at this time of the night, up a few escalators and onto the roof. On the way we chatted about this and that and he seemed pretty excited by the fact I ran my own art business and website because it was what I loved to do. I think he was just really happy to help me do something that I love … so it was a win win. He ended up allowing me to stay up there by myself and make my own way down but said don’t take longer than 5-10 minutes so I was frantically running around shooting as there is this amazing view of the city up there and I might never be up there again. He also said “Don’t get him into trouble” 🙂 so far I haven’t hehe

I titled this one “On top of a Star” and what I didn’t notice at the time of taking this HDR set was that the moon was up just above the building. It wouldn’t have changed much in the way I composed the image as a wide angle lens doesn’t allow for much impact from such a small object in the sky but I think it looks nice rising up. The moon seems really BIG in the sky but when you take a photo of it you always notice that it turns out to be this tiny little spec in your image. Our brains have a way of making things seem super large because they act like telescopes without us having to do anything. The human eye is probably the best camera available.

Maybe I should have titled the image a moon and a star ….
