Here is how an artist takes on surf photography.. I had a blast shooting all the surfers down on the 6+ foot conditions yesterday down at Manly Beach. I was parked in the sand with tripod and I put all three legs together and used it like a 6 foot monopod that allowed me to swing about freely. I was using a 28-300mm zoom lens and could get right in on the surfers or at a more of a Landscape view like this one at 180mm. I shot maybe 80 odd images in about 30 minutes and this was definitely one of my favourites. I love the fact that he is attempting to grab his board in attempt to land the air and that he is a good 10 feet over the surface of the water. I think in a surf magazine they would crop right in on the action on this wave to show the surfers expressions and I could have easily done that with all the detail in the shot using the Nikon D800, but it’s me and I do things differently… I want the viewer to get the impact of the surroundings on the surfer and take in whats happening with the ocean and weather. I also want to colour the image in the way to go with that type of endless summer look.
