I don’t know if any of my readers are fans of Scott Lynch’s novels, but creating this image reminded me of one of his books “Red seas under red skies”. I can just image Locke Lamora, the main protagnoist, and his trusty side kick Jean Tannen sailing out into pirate infested waters to get into trouble. If you haven’t heard of Lynch before I can highly recommend his work. It’s like a rich red wine that you can’t quite put down 😉

Back to this image though, I was camped out about 5 minutes walk from here and rose to watch a gorgeous sunrise over the east coast of Australia. This part of the coast has lots of small rocky patches and they make for great exploration. There were lots of weird cactus (cactii?) growing in the area and I felt like I was on mars or something. It is one of those special places where you could come back time and time again and still feel like you were there for the first time. As an artist I could get endless inspiration out of just this 500m stretch of coast line alone. Personally, I liked this view from up on the hill looking back down over the area and it came about after exploring the rocks a little first. I was kind of coming up to reposition further down the rock shelf when I turned and realised the view was spectacular from up here. With the sun rising just up over the horizon and being hidden by the lowest clouds everything was glowing a deep orange.

Post Processing:

Editing this one was a fun one because I took the images through 3 software programs, well 4 if you count Photoshop, to create this rich and colourful HDR photograph. As with most of my HDR shots I take them straight into my HDR software:

Photomatix PRO – Is a MAC and PC HDR software for creating stunning HDR images. They have a free trial, but if you end up buying a copy of Photomatix you can get a 15% Discount with the coupon code LukeZemePhotography

Then I took the image back into Lightroom and I used one of my own Lightroom Presets from my very own preset pack. I made some small adjustments to the preset as every image is different. You can purchase the whole set of 50 presets for only $12.95 here:

– Luke Zeme’s Landscape Preset Pack- A pack of 50 of my favourite presets featuring HDR. This pack is compatible with Lightroom CC, 6, 5 & 4 !!! as well as Photoshop Camera RAW.

Then I took the result of that development into:

– On1 Perfect Effects – An amazing Filter program to stylise your images. Comes as a standalone filter program which can also be launched from Lightroom, Photoshop or Aperture.

Cheers, if you like my work and would like to leave a response you can do that below. Or if you like you can leave a question for me.

Thanks, Luke
