I’m doing some overseas travel soon to Borneo and Malaysia, so in anticipation for it I took an image from my travels to Japan and developed it today.
Pictured here are inari shrine gates in Kyoto, Japan, and this is at the foot of the mountain. It was amazing how far these stretched on… and on… and on, along with tangent tunnels off to the left and right as you went. I arrived at the shrine before dawn and hiked up through the gates with a torch following a map I held onto with the other. It was quite an experience to explore this place by myself. The Fushimi Inari shrine has statues of foxes everywhere, but I found as I explored the area there were lots of cats living there. You’d find them curled up to one of the shrines or laying out under a tree up in the forest. I truly underestimated how far up the climb was an in the end I turned back before the summit as I had so many other places to explore in Kyoto, fitness could wait! It remains to this day one of my more grand experiences in Japan.
Post-Processing and Shooting:
I had my Nikon D800 DSLR camera on a tripod and fitted with a wide angle lens, the Nikkor 14-24mm. I focused on infinity and shot 5 images in a bracket so that I could create a HDR photograph.
First off in my editing I used this HDR software to tonemap the 5 images
Photomatix PRO – Is a MAC and PC HDR software for creating stunning HDR images. They have a free trial, but if you end up buying a copy of Photomatix you can get a 15% Discount with the coupon code LukeZemePhotography
Then I used a very specialised program called Topaz Clarity which is solely used for creating contrast, but it has got A LOT of varitions to choose from.

I then finished off the image in On1 Perfect Effects, where I made changes to colour and added a vignette to bring the viewers eye into the tunnel. Perfect Effects is the filter program apart of the complete set called
