This photograph is the perfect example of why I like to always have a camera on me at all times. Right in front of this spot is where all the sea planes land and take off on the water. Plus there is always lots of sailing and paddle boarding going on here at any given time. I’d just finished a game of social basketball in a local comp and was on my way home when I stopped off by the bay to see what kind of sunset was going on. It was one of those ones where the rays from the sun kind of shoot out like an explosion on the horizon. Anyways, I’d taken my shoes off and was wading about in the cool temperate waters of Sydney Harbour composing this image on a tripod. This is Rose Bay in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and I was using a 36MP full frame camera the Sony A7r, which has enough detail to make out the city skyline on the horizon. You can even make out the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the full detailed shot.

Processing and Shooting:

One of the rules of photography is that you should never have the horizon in the centre of the frame, but I tink in cases like this where you can compose enough elements in the top and bottom of the frame there are exceptions. The fact that there were also reflections in the image helped to strengthen having the horizon in the middle of the frame too.

This is actually a HDR image would you belive?! I used 3 different frames to get a HDR sky using

Photomatix PRO – Is a MAC and PC HDR software for creating stunning HDR images. They have a free trial, but if you end up buying a copy of Photomatix you can get a 15% Discount with the coupon code LukeZemePhotography

Then to stylise the image I used

– On1 Photo suite the complete collection of photo editing software from OnOne.

But if you just want to get the filter software from the suite, its called

– On1 Perfect Effects – An amazing Filter program to stylise your images. Comes as a standalone filter program which can also be launched from Lightroom, Photoshop or Aperture.
