The hub of Sydney is definitely Town Hall and George street and I took my camera gear into the thralls of people and traffic at peak hour on thursday night shopping. It definitely can’t compare to Shibuya, Tokyo, but it is still a mass of bodies all with agendas that first glance appear immediate. Below this road there is a series of underground passageways which lead to various train stations and shortcuts to other streets and a malls. You can find people lining up 20 people deep for ice cream or merchants peddling handbags and other trinkets.

Through photographic long exposure techniques I was able to capture some of this energy surrounding Sydney’s hub and in a way this has created a sense of emptiness in the space. I find the age of the QVB, centre of the composition, almost eternal in it’s juxtaposition with the thriving modern city around it. It’s quite remarkable how it sits proudly at Sydney’s heart.

Software Used:

Photomatix PRO – Is a MAC and PC HDR software for creating stunning HDR images. They have a free trial, but if you end up buying a copy of Photomatix you can get a 15% Discount with the coupon code LukeZemePhotography

– Perfect Effects An amazing Filter program to stylise the image. a standalone Filter program which can also be launched from Lightroom, Photoshop or Aperture

– On1 Photo Suite the complete OnOne software package

Post Processing

The idea with this edit was to try and mix modern with traditional technique and colour. I wanted to keep the cold texture and feel of the sandstone building but also highlight the movement and colour of the buses and cars on the street. It is a 5 bracket HDR processed using Photomatix – (you can get 15% off HDRsoft software using the discount code LukeZemePhotography if you don’t already own it). I then used On1 Photo Suite to stylise the image, using the module Perfect Effects which is the Filter program in the Photo Suite.
