The view from 270 metres above the city is just stunning from this roof top observation deck at mori tower, Roppongi Tokyo. On a clear day Mt. Fuji is easily visible to the West, but it’s just a dimple on the horizon. When I visited there was an exhibition on teddy bears on a floor just 2 or 3 below the roof level and the Japanese love all things cuddly so the lines were monumental ! Luckily since I was just going to the roof I was able to bypass the lines and ride the lift straight up with a group of 15 or so teddy bear enthusiast’s, but I’d say there was more than 1000 people in the lines which stretched over a couple of levels of the tower.

One of the albums I took on my ipod to Japan was the “Lost in Translation” soundtrack from the movie with Scarlett Johansson. In the movie, Scarlett is a newly wed living in Tokyo and her husband is always busy with work so she has to explore this new world, often alone. The soundtrack is a mix of Japanese and modern euphoric songs that, for me, enhanced the landscapes around me. I was listening to it whilst on the roof  waiting for sunset and in a way I felt a bit like Scarlett, haha, exploring a world where the modern Japan meets the ancient.

This a shot I got looking east and you can see Tokyo Tower, left centre, which is actually an Eiffel Tower inspired design… There is so much to look at from the observation deck and it’s great way to learn the layout of the city below where there are 360° views. The observation deck was open till 9pm but after sunset I headed for the excitement of Shibuya !
